First
Project : Waste Management
in Pupuan Tabanan
Once the plastic pyramid was complete, the founders of Wisnu decided to continue their
support for the Foundation. What the Ostentrik Project had offered them was a peek at the
enormity of the waste problem in Bali, and the acute need for an independent organisation
to develop ideas about how to deal with it. One of the first things the Foundation did on
completion of the plastic pyramid was to conduct a survey aof waste management on the
island, which revealed that 80% of Balis waste is organic matter.
On the basis of this, it
became clear that recycling and composting was key to dealing with Balis waste
problem. Eager to place greater emphasis on community involvement in tackling the waste
problem than had been the case to date, The Foundation devised a small scale, integrated
waste management project that was designed to accord with local needs and capacity in
Pupuan Tabanan.
The project involved the
collection and separation of household waste and the production of compost from organic
waste.
