 According to the Public Census of 1995, Riau is positioned 5th on the list of the 8 provinces in Sumatra in terms of its population. The National Economic Survey of 1998 Riau recorded the total population as 4,122,146, of which 2,072,735 are men and 2,049,411 women. This equates to 1,111,528 families with an average of 3.71 persons per family.
Population density per km by regencies/cities shows that Pekanbaru City is the most heavily populated with 986.29 people per square km. This is followed by Batam City with 324.31 people per square km, and the least populated area is Kampar Regency with only 23.20 people per square km.
In order to improve economy, defence and security, the government are promoting a transmigration project to spread citizens from high-density communities to low-density areas. So far, the government have successfully placed 124,793 families (518,965 people), mainly from Java Island.
