South Sulawesi is one of Indonesia’s most fascinating and diverse provinces offering visitors a stunning wealth of natural and cultural attractions. Ecologically it is a green, fertile land covered with sculpted rice fields and forested mountain peaks and dotted with sparkling lakes and dramatic waterfalls.

Culturally, it is a vibrant blend of traditions. The province’s capital, Ujungpandang, is a modern city serving as the gateway to Eastern Indonesia.

The southern part of the province is home to the Bugis people, a nomadic group of seafarers who still follow their ancient ways sailing their traditional boats around the Indonesian archipelago.

The northern region of the province is the home of Torajan culture, one of the most colorful and complex in the world. Toraja land has become a favorite destination for visitors to Indonesia, who come to witness the elaborate funeral ceremonies the local people are renowned for.

Around the main Toraja towns of Rantepao and Makale, visitors can trek through the unspoiled countryside to visit traditional villages or witness such natural wonders such as waterfalls, caves and sparkling clear lakes.
