This is the Denpasar town square. The name of the square is derived from the two words, Puputan, means the last blood drop battle, while Badung is a name of a regency in Bali (formerly Denpasar is a part of Badung regency).
A monument of Puputan Badung, formed two men and a women drawing keris, is standing on the west side of the field. Mainly the monument was built to commemorate the braveness of the heroes against the colonialists, while the square is usually used as a place to hold official ceremonies of the city, like: the Independent Day ceremony, National Education ceremony, and so forth. However, the general praying a Hindus holy days such as: Tawur Kesanga before the Nyepi Day, Saraswati (Education Holy Day), and many others are held in this field, since the central temple of the city, i.e. the Jagatnatha temple is situated in opposite side of the north part of the square.
Usually, on the late afternoon, the people Denpasar utilized the square as a place to relax with family. The square provides such wide space for people to hanging around, relax on the grass, talking and gigling with their family or friends, enjoying the square’s landscaped garden. Some teenagers are also use the square for skate- boarding and roller- blading, while on the north part of the square a big chess board is put, as well as some tables are also provided for those who also want to play chess but in terms of normal size.
The most crowded view in the square could be seen on Saturday and Sunday, where as those days are weekends, times for everyone to have fun and relax, escape from daily routine. A number of street vendors are also crowding the square, selling their items for the people at the square.
