South Kalimantan is one of the most densely populated provinces within Kalimantan. Its inhabitants, both the indigenous Dayaks together with transmigrants from Java and other Indonesian islands, number over three million. Most people live in the capital of Banjarmasin, a fascinating town, mainly built on the water. The province is an important economic center for diamond mining, timber and rattan. Banjarmasin offers travelers comfortable accommodation, from where people can explore the colorful indigenous villages.

The South Kalimantan countryside is also rich in cultural and natural attractions. The Meratus Mountains in the northeast of the province offer splendid trekking through deep green forested hills criss-crossed with rivers and dotted with lakes, caves and waterfalls. Around the tranquil mountain town of Loksado, there are a number of Dayak villages, where visitors are welcome to witness the local inhabitants practicing a way of life that dates back to centuries ago.
