During past centuries, Ubud and surrounding areas have been played a significant role in Balinese historical epic. Throughout the Bronze Age, Ubud was already a fountain of culture, as abundant megalithic ruins, stepped pyramids, and numerous other archeological remains were found in this area. Went through the golden age of Majapahit (Indonesia’s great kingdom in East Java on 4th century) Kingdoms, Ubud still played its important role, by hosting a thriving kingdom which was established by Anak Wungsu, the ruler of Bali on that time.

In the early of the 18th Century, a descendant of the Gelgel (former central of Bali Kingdom) line palace established a palace in Timbul, south of Ubud. During the 19th Century, Ubud was important court under the Sukawati feudal aristocrat, due to adherence to Gianyar. Ending the 19th Century, the Dutch commenced to engage in Balinese internal affairs, stimulating conflicts among rival kingdoms. The King of Gianyar, and allied feudal lords, including the Sukawatis who established the royal palace of Ubud, yielded to the Dutch and took advantages by the colonial’s defense.

Under Dutch colonial controller, Ubud palace was given comparative autonomy to conserve and develop traditional arts and culture, backed-up by its colonial supervisors. Throughout the 20s and 30s, Ubud was portended as Bali’s cultural highlight, and became a well-groomed destination for adventurous foreign writers, anthropologists, artists and other creative spirits and culture vultures.

Early of 70s, the youngster of backpackers began to disembark in Ubud, as they explored Asia searching for brainwave, mystical experience and nice site to hang out. Ubud anticipated the trend by affording a rising quantity of services to accommodate the needs of their western guests.

Time goes by, nowadays Ubud is a not only a home for enormous vibrant arts and culture, in which this artisan community now lives among the lavish resorts and villas, which harmoniously associated with the well-preserved nature.
