The Tampaksiring Presedential Palace situated in Tampaksiring Village of Tampaksiring district, Gianyar Regency is the only presidential palace built after the Indonesian Independence. It was constructed between 1957 to 1963.

The palace was initiated by the Indonesian first president, Soekarno who desired for a soothing palace within a cool air far-away from the city’s hustle and bustle. The place then became an ideal place for the president’s family while having vacation in Bali, as well as the guesthouse for the state’s guests who visit Indonesia.

The palace which was designed by R.M. Soedarsono divided into four main buildings, i.e. Wisma Merdeka (1,200 m2), Wisma Bima (2,000 m2), Wisma Yudhistira, and Wisma Negara. Wisma Merdeka and Wisma Yudhistira were firstly built, followed by the Wisma Negara and Wisma Bima.

Every building has it own function. Wisma Merdeka is the place where the president’s family sleep, while the Wisma Negara is the guestroom for treating the state’s guests. Wisma Yudhistira is functioned as the press room, while the Wisma Bima is the place for the presidential bodyguards. The palace is also completed with a stage where some arts performance occasionally shown.

The former Prime Minister of the former Soviet Union, Krushchev was staying at the palace at 1965. He witnessed the Legong Mask Dance which performed in the palace’s compund.

After Soekarno resigned from the position of Indonesian President on 1967, the palace then become a museum beside it main function as the presidential relaxing place. The palace is now open for visitors. But, before visiting the palace, visitors must send application to the Head of the Presidential Household in Jakarta. The application must include the name of the people who aim to visit the palace. However, the recommendation for visiting the palace is only issued for educative purposes.
