Tumpek Kandang, occasionally called Tumpek Andang or Tumpek Uye, falls five weeks after Tumpek Krulut, on the Saturday of Uye, the 22nd week of the Pawukon cycle.

The name of this special day comes from the word ‘kandang’ meaning ‘cage’. It is because this day is to honor domestic animals, especially cows and pigs, which are highly valued in Bali.

Cows are also considered to be the best animals for farmers. It is written in holy bibles that the white cow is the vehicle of the God Shiva.

On this day, the cows are washed and kamben (traditional materials) are thrown over their backs, and special cone-shaped spirals of young coconut leaves are placed on their horns.

Meanwhile, the pigs are usually just decorated by wrapping a white cloth around their bellies. The animals are given special foods, prayers are offered, and they are sprinkled with rice and holy water.
