Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Uduh or Tumpek Pengatag occurs five weeks after the Tumpek Landep, on Saniscara (Saturday) Kliwon Wariga. It is the flora that benefits from Tumpek Wariga and the Balinese carry out this ceremony because it pleases God to see plants flourish and bear fruit.

Tumpek Wariga is certainly interesting because this Hindu ceremony is so closely related to the new universal consciousness of preserving the environment. This ceremony shows man's respect and thanks for all plant life.

There is a much higher frequency of activity on this day than on others because the preparation for the ceremony starts early in the morning and ends late at night. The actual carrying out of the ceremony is in the afternoon, around 4 pm. At this time, the women and the young girls, dressed in traditional ceremonial clothing head for the garden carrying the offerings which will be given to the spirits that reside in the plants or in the small offering shrines in gardens and fields.

With large knives they make scratches on the tree trunks and place or hang the offerings on the tree. Whilst praying, they beat the trunk with stones or sticks, with the purpose of waking up soul of the tree. Scientifically, the tree reacts to the action of the scratching and blistering on its trunk by a change in its metabolism. This then causes a rapid change of the carbon-nitrogen ratio absorbed by the tree, resulting in a tremendous boost of flowers, and accordingly, fruit production.

The carrying out of this ceremony has resulted in a deep affinity with plant life. There is now a commitment to preserving all vegetation, for instance, no one wishes to cut down tree or unnecessarily clear an area of plants.
