LAOS > OVERVIEW
Known as the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’, and located at the
center of the Mekong region, Laos is not very well known among tourists and
not too well developed due to two decades of being isolated from the outside
world. But these are the factors - together with beautiful scenery, colorful
hill tribes and traditional lifestyles - that make this quiet country so exciting,
attractive and rewarding, and the highlight of Southeast Asia, albeit sometimes
frustrating due to the lack of infrastructure.
The capital, Vientiane, has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, a few pockets
of luxury, and some of the most beautiful temples in the world. The Laotian
people have a reputation for being very peaceful and friendly - even though
Laos was caught up in the Vietnam War and also in a civil war lasting for years.
